HOLIDAYS ON KUDLE BEACH

The view down the beach from the Ayurvedic Clinic where we first stayed on Kudle Beach.

Ray and Ram, who runs the best restaurant on Kudle Beach, according to our young food critic.

Cows! Cows! (12/7/09)

Sunsets frequently light up the tide pools with kaleidoscopic patters in the sand and water...

Ray has a way of jumping on any musical instrument we come across. (Guess who's getting one of these for Christmas ... shh!) (12/7/09)

The Sri Nisargadatta House in Mumbai

Seeing that we were in Mumbai, I couldn't help but want to look at the house of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, probably the foremost exponent of Advaita in the 20th Century.

After reading I Am That, a series of dialogues culled from years of visitors to the Maharaj House, I was positive that he was light-years beyond Freud or Western psychology. Imagine being told that you are your own observer-therapist!

Still, in a city of sweating millions how to find the address ?

Fortunately, the blog posts of travelers makes that easy. Here's a Google Maps result for the address: Vamali Bhavana, Second Floor, Khetwadi 10th Lane, near Grant Road.

That's across the street from the Gents public toilet.

Not knowing what to expect, I left Sara and Ray at nap time, and jumped into a cab.

I felt I was close when pilgrims began to wave at me, nodding, as if I was running in a track that was already well grooved.

Finally I found the street I was looking for.

Sure enough, the house was humble, as I expected.

I wouldn't have guessed it was above a normal tailor shop. (That's his front view on the first floor up.)

I was allowed to go up but no one was home. I sat for awhile meditating at the late Maharaj's front door.

Nothing fancy there either; the present occupants have a typical Ganesh statue at their entrance.

I decided to shoot a few minutes of video of the place for those who couldn't make it all the way to Mumbai.

Here are four and a half minutes looking out from the doorway of the Maharaj House.

The neighbors didn't seem too impressed about the great man who had lived next to them for decades. The soap seller (shop across the street on the left) only made this comment when asked about Nisargadatta - "Hah."

Then I noticed a woman nearby who was living in a doorway across the street. In my enthusiasm, I wondered if she was a Nisargadatta devotee who had taken up the watch near the master's old haunt.

Turned out she was an interesting person in her own right, with a few thoughts of her own to share.

Well, nothing beats the actual text of I Am That, in my estimation. Here's a free PDF download.

Read with care - it could change how you look at the world!

The Zoo in Bombay

After finally getting to Mumbai, we're waiting for our bags to show up on the belt at 3 am.

Turns out, we see the next three dawns in Mumbai, just because we're jet lagged with the time change.

Kinda nice, actually, strolling around before even the chai bhais are out moving the cups.

We're coasting around dawn through the bird convention that takes place every day around here.

The charming view from our hotel reminds me of Brooklyn.

"Dad, ride in taxi car!"

Finally, we score quality malaria meds at the Royal Pharmacy. Not that we were being goal oriented, or anything like that.

Layover in Land of the Ancestors

After landing in Frankfurt, first thing we do is set off in search of some of the local brain trust, the perfect Frankfurter.

Ray is never as forward looking as when expecting a train.

Note "Other Dog" the cuddly pal who goes along to make sure our boy is well treated by the natives ...

Dood, look at these awesome tracks!

David kisses Sprint good-bye, and gives his cell phone a kindly toss into the River Main.

Later it's good beer and, yes, the wurst experience in a real German stube with frosted glass windows and a back room for loud customers with babies. A cadre of American GIs is also packed in while we suck up the last of our sauerkraut.

It's not too far

It's the 20th, and that means we're off to Frankfurt.

After catching the cats and putting them inside, the intrepid travelers mug for a group pic before taking off.

This will be Ray's first red eye flight - and also his first ocean crossing.

Kindly neighbor Frank gives us a lift to the infamous Van Gulder Bus.

Ray is so excited on the ride to O'Hare that he's impossible to distract from the window.

O'Hare is a marvel of shiny surfaces.

This brontosaurus barely fits in the waiting room ...

Wow check out the light sculpture over the cat walk!

Ray cools his feet on the closed shoe shine stand.

The Zoo in Madison

Before leaving for India, Ray goes to the zoo in Madison one last time to say "see you later" to his friends.

As always, Ray visits the buffalo first.

Later, the tiger is a lot like what he expects to find while in Asia.

Pacing around a closed space like the tiger makes total sense to Ray, who measures the length of the area in paces.

Thank you, Madison!
