The Sri Nisargadatta House in Mumbai

Seeing that we were in Mumbai, I couldn't help but want to look at the house of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, probably the foremost exponent of Advaita in the 20th Century.

After reading I Am That, a series of dialogues culled from years of visitors to the Maharaj House, I was positive that he was light-years beyond Freud or Western psychology. Imagine being told that you are your own observer-therapist!

Still, in a city of sweating millions how to find the address ?

Fortunately, the blog posts of travelers makes that easy. Here's a Google Maps result for the address: Vamali Bhavana, Second Floor, Khetwadi 10th Lane, near Grant Road.

That's across the street from the Gents public toilet.

Not knowing what to expect, I left Sara and Ray at nap time, and jumped into a cab.

I felt I was close when pilgrims began to wave at me, nodding, as if I was running in a track that was already well grooved.

Finally I found the street I was looking for.

Sure enough, the house was humble, as I expected.

I wouldn't have guessed it was above a normal tailor shop. (That's his front view on the first floor up.)

I was allowed to go up but no one was home. I sat for awhile meditating at the late Maharaj's front door.

Nothing fancy there either; the present occupants have a typical Ganesh statue at their entrance.

I decided to shoot a few minutes of video of the place for those who couldn't make it all the way to Mumbai.

Here are four and a half minutes looking out from the doorway of the Maharaj House.

The neighbors didn't seem too impressed about the great man who had lived next to them for decades. The soap seller (shop across the street on the left) only made this comment when asked about Nisargadatta - "Hah."

Then I noticed a woman nearby who was living in a doorway across the street. In my enthusiasm, I wondered if she was a Nisargadatta devotee who had taken up the watch near the master's old haunt.

Turned out she was an interesting person in her own right, with a few thoughts of her own to share.

Well, nothing beats the actual text of I Am That, in my estimation. Here's a free PDF download.

Read with care - it could change how you look at the world!

  1. Hey David - first off, greetings and thanks, give Sara & Ray babe big hugs; secondly, thanks much for the slice of life hallway view from Kethwadi 10th Lane.

It's remarkable to realize Nisargadatta sat upstairs in a crowded room full of seekers, pretty much washing away all their misconceptions.

Like the link to I AM That. If you open with Adobe you will find numbered pages, recommend pp 172 thru 174 otherwise, highly recommend re-reading & meditating on dialogue 48 "Awareness is Free".

This section in I Am That provided me with the 'kensho' or 'epiphany' needed to unlock the meaning hidden in all the other sections. If it were a roman-a-clef, then the master keys are 'mind,' 'consciousness,' and 'awareness!'

Understanding, precisely the meaning of these 3 terms, and not confusing one for the other, will unlock the door to understanding that reveals to you, your true nature!

What a blessing to the world, Nisargadatta.

On a bright note, I've been welcomed by CIIS and am registering at noon today, and shall graduate mid-December next year.

Investigating Pacifica Grad Institute for Mythology Studies with emphasis in Depth Psychology. Tally ho, and cheerio!

Thanks much for e-mails and staying in touch, at least I have some vicarious vibration of your visit.

    All the best,

    Robert

  3. Thanks to this post I found the house in Mumbai two weeks ago.
The family let me go inside the house. There was a small image of nissargadatta in the wall.

Nothing more and all very simple.

I was there for a few minutes in silence. Feeling the space and remembering what a great man lived there. It was enough for me and I kept this moments inside of me forever.

Who am I? Why this "I" chose go there?

Evidently it is not necessary go there...or anywhere but this "I" remains. Illusions. The seeker still alive.

Just sharing my thoughts...just thinking out loud.

    David.

    1. Thanks very very much. Some more directions..
Get down at Grant Road suburban railway station (this is on western railway line on churchgate route) Come out from the station from the east side. Take an immediate right and pass along the small shops along the road and you will see a big over-bridge. Walk along the bridge and you are in M.S.Ali road. Walk about 20 mts or so (or you can take a taxi - generally mumbai taxiwallas are very honest and polite - today (28th May 2017) he charged me Rs.22) and take a right turn after Oriental hotel. There is a stone plaque which says Yusuf Miyaji Agloria Chowk here. It seems the residents of the house generally allow to go upstairs and make a pranam. But please don't take it for granted.

It is a great experience to feel the peace inside the house for a spiritual sadhaka.
